Year-End Wrap-Up...a Celebration of BlogHers Act Canada

Istock_000006277253xsmall Wow, how did it get to be August again so quickly?

The fact that it’s August means that we’ve been working away here at BlogHers Act Canada for a whole year.  That’s something to celebrate! Together we’ve done some good work over the past year, dealing with all kinds of environmental and social issues that are important to women and men, parents and non-parents alike.

We kicked off the year dealing with sending our kids back to school with less packaging.

In October, we focused on recycling.

November’s challenge was to reduce home energy use, but we also launched our campaign to rid plastic containers of Bisphenol-A.

December brought out our efforts to green up the holiday season, and we continued to push legislators to ban Bisphenol-A.

In the new year, we kicked meat off of our plates on occasion, going semi-vegetarian and eating meatless meals at least once a week. We also proudly teamed up with Green Mom Finds and the League of Maternal Justice.

In February we cleaned out our closets in an effort to eliminate plastic bags.

In March we spent a little time looking at eco-fashion.  Admittedly, there is a lot more work to be done when it comes to this exciting topic!

April’s focus was on teaching our kids to go green. In addition, we were proud to announce that our efforts to ban Bisphenol-A had been rewarded when Health Canada announced that we would be the first country to make a health finding against BPA.

With the advent of spring, we spent the month of May talking about greener gardening, especially banning pesticide use.

June’s challenge was to reduce our automobile footprint (an effort many of us are undertaking now that the price of fuel is skyrocketing).

And finally, last month our focus was on eating locally, a topic that has since come to fascinate me on a daily basis.

Naturally, the next steps will be to solicit YOUR ideas about how the next year should play out. Although there are exciting things afoot for this site, we’ll still be focusing on environmental issues.  What issues would you like to see us feature here at BlogHers Act Canada that we haven’t already confronted?  Are there any challenges we’ve already addressed that you think we should revisit in more depth?

Help us spread the word! Write a blog post detailing your ideas and concerns, and provide a link to your site in the comment section to this post.  This is a community effort, after all, and we love to find that the site is getting other people writing about the things they are passionate about.

We’ve loved bringing these issues to your computer screen over the last year, and look forward to continuing to do so in 2008-2009.
