July 2008

Dine out, eat local.

Istock_000005268248xsmallThe movement for eating local is gaining momentum in the hospitality industry, which is great news for us here at BlogHers ACT Canada, where July's focus is on eating locally

There are a lot of restaurants making use of local, in-season crops in preparation of daily specials and regular seasonal menu items.  Like me, you may be wondering how to find these restaurants.

More local eating: Get seasonal food right at your door!

How would you like to have fresh, seasonal, locally grown food delivered right to your door on a weekly basis?  It almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

While I haven’t given it a go, I’m really interested in trying out a service like Durham Organics, the company in my community that has begun to offer just such a service.  Green Earth Organics is the big service provider in Toronto (and Vancouver), but doesn’t deliver beyond into Durham Region. For others, it means taking a weekly trip to the farmer’s market to select some regionally-grown produce sold by nearby farmers and baked goods prepared in nearby kitchens.

For other folks, eating locally means paying attention to the labels on the food they purchase at the grocery store in an attempt to bring home only food that was grown or produced in their own province, state or country.
